"The crew were truely caring and attentive and the skipper told us local history about Akaroa. The skipper went out of his way to find dolphins for us aswell. This trip felt personalised more like a charter. It was a surprise for my husbands birthday, we had a fantastic time."

Choosing an Akaroa Tour
Which Akaroa Tour Is Yours?
What the place is, getting there from Christchurch, how the eight tours differ, the seasons, and who each one suits.
Akaroa is a small harbour town on Banks Peninsula, set inside the crater of an old volcano about an hour and a half from Christchurch. It is the place to see Hector’s dolphins from a boat, little penguins at the Pohatu colony, and the quieter bays of the peninsula. In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026 Akaroa has 37 tours and 1,530 reviews; Queenstown has 336 tours and 40,459 reviews. Our pick is Akaroa Dolphins’ 2-hour nature cruise, from $79 and rated 4.9 from 535 reviews, the highest-rated harbour cruise here and the one with a drink, home baking and a free second trip if you see no dolphins.

What Akaroa is, and why it counts as quieter
ChristchurchNZ describes Banks Peninsula as the remains of two volcanoes, and Akaroa as sitting within one of them. The French story is real: a French whaler, Captain Langlois, arranged a land purchase with local Māori and went home to recruit settlers, who arrived in 1840 to find that the Treaty of Waitangi had already given Britain sovereignty. The town kept the French street names and its colonial buildings.
The harbour is also a protected place for dolphins. The Department of Conservation (DOC) created New Zealand’s first marine mammal sanctuary around Banks Peninsula in 1988 to protect Hector’s dolphins, which it classes as Threatened, Nationally Vulnerable, with about 15,000 left. In September 2026 DOC announced a 10-year moratorium on new marine mammal permits around the whole peninsula. Six operators in Akaroa and Lyttelton hold permits and are not affected.
Quieter does not mean empty. ChristchurchNZ notes that cruise passengers are taken ashore by tender to the main wharf, a few metres from the shops and cafés, and that a free shuttle runs on cruise-ship days. If you want the calmer version of the town, check whether a ship is in before you pick a date.
Getting there
ChristchurchNZ puts Akaroa about 86 km from Christchurch, roughly 1.5 hours by car, and warns that the roads are narrow and winding and can take longer than expected. Without a car, the Akaroa French Connection bus leaves daily at 9am from outside the Canterbury Museum and returns at 5:45pm. None of the tours here include transport from Christchurch: they all start in Akaroa, and the stargazing tour starts at the Akaroa Heritage Park car park on Long Bay Road, so you need your own way there.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The two dolphin cruises. Both run 2 hours on a catamaran and both welcome wheelchair users with a companion. Akaroa Dolphins adds the drink, the cookies, warm jackets and its dogs, and offers a free repeat trip if no dolphin is seen; it calls itself one of only two permitted companies that run all year. Black Cat is the lower price, with tea, coffee and hot chocolate, a licensed bar and two open decks; it notes its toilets are not wheelchair friendly. One guest from the United Kingdom on the Black Cat cruise wrote: “Everyone was excited to see the fur seals and the pods of Hector’s Dolphins”.
The Pohatu trips. Pohatu Penguins and Sea Kayaking drives you over the crater rim to Flea Bay in a 4WD minivan. DOC says the bay has the largest little penguin colony on the mainland, about 2,600 kororā, and that the road in is gravel and suitable only for 4WD vehicles, which is why the minivan matters. The scenic tour is about history and nature as much as penguins, the evening trip watches the birds come in at dusk with no artificial light, and the kayak trip spends 1 to 1.5 hours on the water off the marine reserve’s cliffs and caves.
The quieter evenings and days. The stargazing tour uses a 10-inch Dobsonian and a smart telescope and sends you a souvenir photo the next day. The mail run covers 120 km and 10 bays of the Eastern Bays, delivering mail to farms, with a walk on Le Bons Bay beach.

The penguin season is the one to plan around. The evening tour’s listing says the colony breeds from mid-September to the end of December, the birds moult until mid to late February, there are generally no penguins from early March to mid-April, and in winter it is rare to find one. The scenic tour adds that most penguin rehabilitation happens from mid-November to mid-February, and only the 4-hour tour can view it then. If you book the afternoon kayak in summer, the operator says to sort out dinner first, because shops and restaurants will be closed when you get back.
On the water, Black Cat warns that a cool sea breeze can blow even on warm days, and the Eastern Bays operator says to dress in layers for changing coastal weather. The kayak tours depend on sea conditions, and the guide decides on the day whether it is safe to go out.
Who it suits
Families with young children or anyone using a wheelchair should look at the two dolphin cruises, which are the only tours here listed as wheelchair accessible apart from the stargazing night. Wildlife watchers who want penguins should go to Pohatu in season, and the 4WD kayak trip suits anyone aged 8 or over who wants the cliffs and caves at water level (the operator sets a 115 kg limit). If you have already done the harbour, try the mail run or the stargazing night. A guest from the United States wrote of the mail run that “it lets you see parts of the area youd probably miss”.
Akaroa pairs well with a day at Arthur’s Pass, the other easy trip from Christchurch. For the whole route, see the South Island hidden gems itinerary and our quieter alternatives to Queenstown and Milford Sound.

"Not too many dolphin sightings but we did see some early in the trip, also some seals and a large albatross. The boat ride itself is amazing anyway through some spectacular scenery and the pilot gives a good explanation of the geology and history around Akaroa Bay. Complimentary drinks and biscuits a nice touch too."

Akaroa FAQ
The questions people ask before booking in Akaroa, answered in the first sentence. Tour details come from each operator's listing; place facts from ChristchurchNZ and the Department of Conservation (DOC).
About 86 km, roughly 1.5 hours by car. ChristchurchNZ warns that the roads are narrow and winding and can take longer than expected. Without a car, the Akaroa French Connection bus leaves daily at 9am from outside the Canterbury Museum and returns at 5:45pm. Every tour on our Akaroa page starts in Akaroa itself.
No, the dolphins are wild and no operator guarantees them. Akaroa Dolphins says it has a high success rate and offers another trip free if your cruise sees no dolphins, though it gives no refund. Black Cat Cruises calls its cruise a chance to see them. DOC classes Hector's dolphins as Threatened, Nationally Vulnerable. The Akaroa Dolphins cruise has the repeat-trip offer.
Not on the cruises here: Akaroa Dolphins lists swimming with dolphins as excluded. The operator says it holds a DOC marine mammal viewing permit and does not swim with the dolphins for conservation reasons. In September 2026 DOC announced a 10-year moratorium on new marine mammal permits around Banks Peninsula. Check dates for the dolphin cruise.
Best from mid-September to February; there are generally no penguins from early March to mid-April. The evening tour's listing says the colony breeds from mid-September to the end of December and moults until mid to late February, and that in winter it is rare to find a bird. DOC says Pohatu has the largest little penguin colony on the mainland. The evening penguin tour watches them at dusk.
DOC says the road is gravel and suitable only for 4WD vehicles, with limited parking. The land around the beach is private and penguins nest there, so DOC asks visitors to stay on the main beach. The Pohatu tours drive you in by 4WD minivan, and only guided groups can visit the breeding colony, according to the operator. The scenic nature tour runs 2 or 4 hours.
The two dolphin cruises and the stargazing tour are listed as wheelchair accessible. Both cruise operators welcome wheelchair users with an able-bodied companion; Black Cat notes its onboard toilets are not wheelchair friendly. The Pohatu tours and the 4WD kayak trip are listed as not suitable for wheelchair users. Black Cat's cruise has ramps for boarding.
Cruise passengers come ashore at the main wharf, next to the town centre, so check the day before you plan a quiet visit. ChristchurchNZ says passengers are taken ashore by tender, a ride of about 20 minutes, and that a free shuttle runs on cruise-ship days. Black Cat's cruise starts from that same Main Wharf. For other quieter trips, see quieter alternatives to Queenstown and Milford Sound.
A penguin evening at Pohatu or a stargazing tour at the Akaroa Heritage Park. The stargazing tour runs 1.5 hours with a 10-inch Dobsonian and a smart telescope, a hot drink and blankets, in a group of up to 10, but transport to the park is not included. The penguin evening's start time moves with the sunset. The stargazing tour sends a souvenir photo the next day.
