"I had the best day doing the TranzAlpine Train journey. Even though it did rain through the day & it was freezing, it was still a fantastic day. I thoroughly recommend doing this tour, our guide was so friendly & knowledgeable. Castle Hill tour on the way home was great, I’m not even a Narnia fan 😂."

Choosing an Arthur's Pass Day
Which Arthur's Pass Day Is Yours?
What the place is, the train and the road, how the five tours differ, the weather, and who each one suits.
Arthur’s Pass is a mountain village and national park in the Southern Alps, about 140 km from Christchurch on State Highway 73. A day there takes in the TranzAlpine train or the road over the pass, a waterfall walk, the Otira Viaduct and the limestone boulders of Castle Hill. In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026 Arthur’s Pass and Castle Hill have 26 tours and 1,191 reviews; Milford Sound has 97 tours and 24,329 reviews. Our pick is NZ South Island Tours & Travel’s TranzAlpine and Castle Hill day, from $214 and rated 4.8 from 333 reviews. It is the lower-priced of the three train days here, and the only one whose listing puts you on the train going out with no seasonal switch.

What Arthur’s Pass is, and why it counts as quieter
The Department of Conservation (DOC) describes the national park as high mountains, scree slopes, steep gorges and wide braided rivers straddling the main divide of the Southern Alps. The village sits on State Highway 73, about 140 km from Christchurch and 95 km from Greymouth, and the Devils Punchbowl walk from the village climbs to a waterfall DOC gives as 131 metres high.
On the way you pass Kura Tāwhiti, the Castle Hill conservation area, whose limestone outcrops DOC says hold great cultural significance for Ngāi Tahu. Several operators also point out nearby Narnia filming locations; NZ South Island Tours & Travel names Flock Hill as the battlefield from Disney’s film.
Compared with Milford Sound, the counts above show how much less tour traffic there is. That does not mean an empty village: the TranzAlpine stops there, and at lunch one guest from New Zealand on a road day watched three kea “trying to eat people’s food”.
The train and the road
The TranzAlpine is run by KiwiRail and sold as part of Great Journeys New Zealand. It runs between Christchurch and Greymouth on the West Coast, and Arthur’s Pass station, which Great Journeys calls the highest operational station in New Zealand, is the stop for these tours. Great Journeys says the Greymouth to Christchurch train runs daily in summer (October to April) but only on long weekends in winter (May to September), and asks you to be on the platform 20 minutes early.
That timetable explains why the tours switch direction. Cheeky Kea Tours rides the train back from Arthur’s Pass and says its itinerary runs in reverse in winter. Cheeky Kiwi Travel spells it out: from 1 October to 30 April you go by minibus and return on the train, arriving about 7:30pm; from 1 May to 30 September you take the train out and come back by minibus, arriving about 5pm. Our pick’s listing includes the train from Christchurch to Arthur’s Pass, with no seasonal switch.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Train or no train. Three tours include a TranzAlpine ticket for one leg. The two road-only days, at $126 and $101, are the lowest prices here; one guest from New Zealand on the $101 day still wrote that “Seeing the TranzAlpine Train arrive was a highlight for photos”.
Lunch. Cheeky Kea’s two days and Cheeky Kiwi’s include lunch. NZ South Island Tours & Travel leaves it out on both of its days and gives an hour in the village instead; it says “a sandwich or hot pie and a drink typically costs around $15”. Its road day adds coffee and a pie for morning tea at the Sheffield Pie Shop.
Extra stops. Both Cheeky Kea days stop for about an hour at the Waimakariri Gorge, where the train day lists an optional jet boat ride at extra cost, and visit Lake Lyndon. The Cheeky Kea road day adds Cave Stream and Porters Pass. Cheeky Kea also says its road day is not suitable as a shore excursion.

See this tour →Weather and what to bring
This is alpine country and every listing says so. The hero tour “Operates in all weather conditions”, and Cheeky Kea’s road day “takes place rain or shine”. DOC warns that snow can close State Highway 73, that the Devils Punchbowl track is icy in winter and after snow, and that Wardens Creek on the track has no bridge and can flood after heavy rain. One guest from New Zealand on Cheeky Kiwi’s day wrote that “due to the rain Canterbury has had we couldn’t cross the stream to visit the bridges and devils punch bowl”.
Bring layers, a jacket and comfortable walking shoes. The Devils Punchbowl walk has more than 400 steps, according to DOC, and every listing except Cheeky Kea’s two days marks the tour as not suitable for people with mobility impairments. Dogs are not allowed in the national park.
Who it suits
If the train is the point, our pick puts you on it going out, with morning tickets confirmed from May to September, and Cheeky Kea’s train day suits people who want lunch included and the larger number of reviews. Cheeky Kiwi’s suits a small group of up to 15 and families with young children, since it provides booster seats for children aged 7 and under. If the mountains matter more than the train, the two road days cost about half as much.
Arthur’s Pass pairs well with a slow day at Akaroa, the other easy trip from Christchurch, and the West Coast beyond the pass leads on to the West Coast glaciers. For the whole route, see the South Island hidden gems itinerary.

Arthur's Pass FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a day at Arthur's Pass, answered in the first sentence. Tour details come from each operator's listing; place facts from the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Great Journeys New Zealand.
About 140 km on State Highway 73, according to DOC. The village is about 95 km from Greymouth on the other side of the pass. Every day tour here is listed at 10 hours with pickup and drop-off in Christchurch. The Arthur's Pass page compares all five.
Yes: three of the tours here put you on the TranzAlpine one way and bring you back by minibus. The train runs between Christchurch and Greymouth, and Arthur's Pass station is the stop, which Great Journeys calls the highest operational station in New Zealand. Our pick includes the train from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. Check dates for the TranzAlpine and Castle Hill day.
Because the eastbound train does not run every day in winter. Great Journeys says the Greymouth to Christchurch train runs daily from October to April but only on long weekends from May to September. Cheeky Kiwi Travel returns on the train from 1 October to 30 April and takes it out from 1 May to 30 September; Cheeky Kea says its itinerary runs in reverse in winter. Cheeky Kiwi's day lists both seasons.
On three of the five: both Cheeky Kea days and Cheeky Kiwi's include lunch. NZ South Island Tours & Travel leaves lunch out on both its days and gives you an hour in Arthur's Pass Village to buy it; it says a sandwich or hot pie and a drink typically costs around $15. Its road day includes a pie and coffee at the Sheffield Pie Shop. Cheeky Kea's train day includes lunch.
A steep climb with more than 400 steps to a 131-metre waterfall, according to DOC. The track starts at the car park at the northern end of Arthur's Pass Village. DOC warns it is icy in winter and that Wardens Creek has no bridge and can flood after heavy rain. Cheeky Kiwi Travel says the walk needs low to moderate fitness; on the hero tour it is not guided. The road day recommends it.
Castle Hill, Kura Tāwhiti, is a field of limestone outcrops that DOC says hold great cultural significance for Ngāi Tahu. Every tour here stops there. NZ South Island Tours & Travel says the Narnia battlefield was filmed at nearby Flock Hill, and its road day stops at both. Our pick visits Castle Hill on the way back.
The listings that say so run rain or shine, though snow can close the road. NZ South Island Tours & Travel says its train day operates in all weather and Cheeky Kea says its road day takes place rain or shine. DOC warns that snow can close State Highway 73, so check conditions in winter. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before applies on every tour here; see the South Island hidden gems itinerary for where the day fits.
Cheeky Kiwi Travel caters for young children, but most of these days are not for limited mobility. Three of the five listings say they are not suitable for people with mobility impairments: both NZ South Island Tours & Travel days and Cheeky Kiwi's. Cheeky Kiwi provides safety or booster seats for children aged 7 and under and asks for children's ages when you book. See Cheeky Kiwi's day.
