How the Glenorchy Half-Day Works
Four steps, from the meeting point on Camp Street to the drive back down the lake.
Meet on Camp Street
Wait outside the Marmolada Cafe at 43 Camp Street in Queenstown: 7:50am for the morning tour, 1:25pm for the afternoon one. Look for a white or silver Toyota van with Pure Glenorchy on the side. Late arrivals who miss the tour are not refunded, and hotel pickup is available if you select that option.
The Glenorchy Road and 12 Mile Delta
The road follows Lake Wakatipu. The first stop is 12 Mile Delta, with a short walk over the 12 Mile canyon footbridge, then views to Bennetts Bluff before Glenorchy's historic wharf and red shed. The walking is light, and you can stay in the vehicle at any stop.
Costumes, Paradise and the Dart Valley
In Mt Aspiring National Park, at what the listing calls the home of Lothlórien Forest, you can dress up in Lord of the Rings costumes with replica steel swords. The van then heads up the Dart Valley through Paradise to the place the listing calls Isengard.
Tea and the Drive Back
A light morning or afternoon tea with hot tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits is included, and the guide shares behind-the-scenes stories on the way back to Queenstown. The tour runs 4.5 hours in all weather, so dress for it; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Choosing a Glenorchy Trip
Which Glenorchy Trip Is Yours?
What the place is, how to get there, how the six trips differ, the weather, and who each one suits.
Glenorchy is the small town at the head of Lake Wakatipu, about 45 km and 45 minutes by road from Queenstown, and the road beyond it runs up to Paradise and the Dart Valley. It has bookable tours but a fraction of Queenstown’s traffic: in GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, Glenorchy had 21 tours and 1,125 reviews, against 336 tours and 40,459 reviews for Queenstown. Our pick is Pure Glenorchy’s Lord of the Rings half-day, from $118 and rated 4.9 from 513 reviews: a small group limited to 11, with costumes, tea and national park fees included.

What Glenorchy is
Destination Queenstown calls the Queenstown to Glenorchy road one of the world’s great scenic drives and says it takes you into Lord of the Rings country. Glenorchy is also one of the entrances to Te Wāhipounamu, the South West UNESCO World Heritage Area, and the jump-off point for the Routeburn, Greenstone and Caples tracks.
The tours here keep to the road and the valley floor. Pure Glenorchy’s stops are 12 Mile Delta, Bennetts Bluff, Glenorchy’s wharf and red shed, then Mt Aspiring National Park, Paradise and the Dart Valley. The listings name the film locations themselves. Pure Glenorchy places Lothlórien Forest in Mt Aspiring National Park and takes you “up the Dart Valley through ‘Paradise’ to Isengard”. Nomad Adventures names 12 Mile Delta as “the location of the Ithilien Camp”, and Altitude Tours says that in Paradise “you will also get to see the famous locations of Isengard and Saruman’s Tower”. Two operators also list locations from X-Men Origins: Wolverine; Nomad adds The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
You do not need to be a fan. A guest from Australia on the Pure Glenorchy tour wrote: “A great tour with spectacular sights - recommended even if you aren’t that into LOR!”
Getting there
Destination Queenstown gives the drive as 45 km and 45 minutes. Every road tour on this page starts in central Queenstown: Camp Street for Pure Glenorchy and Altitude Tours, the Athol Street bus stop for Queenstown Expeditions, and 37 Shotover Street for Nomad Adventures. The helicopter flight is different: it leaves from 35 Mull Street in Glenorchy, so you need your own way there.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The film-location half-days. Pure Glenorchy and Altitude Tours both run 4.5 hours, include tea and offer costumes. Pure Glenorchy is sold as a small group limited to 11 and includes national park fees. Altitude Tours is the one that stops for free time in Glenorchy itself and for 30 minutes in Paradise, and its guide sets up a picnic morning tea at one of several spots.
The lowest price. Queenstown Expeditions’ coach day is $56 and gives you 1.5 hours of free time in Glenorchy instead of a guided film itinerary. Food is not included; a guest from Australia recommended Mrs Woolly’s General Store and added: “best to sit on the left side going there and right side back to Queenstown.”
The 4WD. Nomad Adventures travels in a six-seat 4WD and calls its tour the one “if your main focus is to see as many Lord of the Rings locations as possible”. A guest from the United States wrote that it “was a very bumpy ride in the jeep-type vehicle, but that was part of the adventure.”
The helicopter. Heli Glenorchy flies past the hanging Earnslaw Glacier and lands for 20 minutes in the Earnslaw Burn valley basin. It is a shared flight of 6 to 9 passengers, accurate weights are required at booking, and it is weather dependent, with a full refund if the operator cancels or changes it.

A 45-minute flight from Glenorchy past the Earnslaw Glacier, with a 20-minute landing in the valley basin.
See this tour →A second back-country trip: Skippers Canyon
Skippers Canyon is not Glenorchy. It is a different valley near Queenstown, on the Shotover River, and it suits anyone who has done the Glenorchy road and wants another quiet half-day. According to New Zealand’s tourism board, Skippers Road was built between 1883 and 1890 for the gold diggings, and rental car companies do not allow their vehicles on this narrow, unsealed road. The Goldrush Tour takes up to 11 people in a 4WD, plays documentary-style audio stories in eight languages, and finishes at Gantley’s Tavern with a coffee, beer or wine included. One guest from Australia found the road “very intense”, with “a dramatic drop on one side”, though “it’s all under control”. It is not suitable for wheelchair users or for children under 3.
Season and weather
Every road tour here runs in the rain: Pure Glenorchy operates “in all weather conditions”, Queenstown Expeditions “rain or shine”, and Altitude Tours warns that some locations may be muddy. The helicopter flight depends on the weather. Heli Glenorchy notes that from June to August the Earnslaw Burn has fewer fast-flowing waterfalls than from September to March, though there is usually more snow on the glacier and in the valley.
Who it suits
Lord of the Rings fans should start with Pure Glenorchy or Nomad Adventures. If you mainly want the scenery and a slower pace, Altitude Tours gives you a picnic in Paradise, and Queenstown Expeditions is the low-cost way to spend time in the town. The helicopter is for anyone who wants to land near the ice. If you have more time, Glenorchy fits into a longer route on the South Island hidden gems itinerary, and quieter alternatives to Queenstown and Milford Sound sets it beside Doubtful Sound and the West Coast glaciers.

About 45 km, which Destination Queenstown puts at 45 minutes by road. The road follows Lake Wakatipu the whole way, and the tours stop along it, at 12 Mile Delta and Bennetts Bluff on Pure Glenorchy's route. The half-day tours from Queenstown run 4 to 4.5 hours in all. Pure Glenorchy's tour lists every stop.
The listings name Isengard in the Dart Valley, Lothlórien Forest in Mt Aspiring National Park and, on one tour, the Ithilien Camp at 12 Mile Delta. Pure Glenorchy goes 'up the Dart Valley through Paradise to Isengard', and Nomad Adventures names 12 Mile Delta as 'the location of the Ithilien Camp'. Only the helicopter flight depends on the weather. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before on every trip here. Nomad Adventures' 4WD tour offers another date or a full refund if it cancels for weather.
No: Skippers Canyon is a separate valley on the Shotover River, reached by its own road from Queenstown. New Zealand's tourism board says Skippers Road was built between 1883 and 1890 and that rental car companies do not allow their vehicles on it. The Goldrush Tour takes up to 11 people up the canyon in a 4WD, with audio stories in eight languages and a drink at a historic pub. See the Skippers Canyon tour.
Some are: Pure Glenorchy is not suitable for children under 5, and prams and strollers are not allowed on board. The South Island hidden gems itinerary helps plan a longer trip.
