Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound?
Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound: the quieter, larger fiord against the famous one. How you get there, how long the day is, what it costs and who each suits.
Choose Doubtful Sound if you want the quieter fiord and can give it a longer day; choose Milford Sound if you have one day from Queenstown and want the easier trip. DOC describes Doubtful Sound as one of the largest of the fiords and “quieter and more remote” than Milford. In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, it has 8 tours against Milford Sound’s 97.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check of the booking platform: the Doubtful Sound tours sold on this site, and for Milford Sound the most reviewed tours in each format (Pure Milford’s coach and cruise from Queenstown and from Te Anau, the fly-cruise-fly flights from Queenstown, RealNZ’s overnight cruise). Operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Why Doubtful Sound is quieter
Because it is harder to reach. There is no road from the outside world to the fiord: you cross Lake Manapouri by boat from Pearl Harbour, then a coach takes the road over Wilmot Pass, which climbs to 671 m, down to Deep Cove. DOC says driving that road needs a permit. The extra legs are part of the trip, and they are why most day visitors go to Milford instead.
What you see
Both are steep, forested fiords with waterfalls after rain. DOC notes Doubtful Sound has three main arms and one of the southernmost populations of bottlenose dolphins; no tour can promise them. Tourism New Zealand gives Doubtful Sound an average of 182 days of rain a year and says it is at its best just after rain.
